Philippe Ros was born in France. After completing his studies at the Ecole Nationale Louis Lumière in Paris, he spent 11 years working as a camera assistant, most notably with Bernard Lutic. He specialised in “intuitive” focusing with foreign operators, such as Gerry Fisher, BSC, Michael Serezin, BSC and Tonino Delli Colli, AIC.
But it was an American production that gave him the chance to start his professional career as a director of photography - working in cinemascope, from a motorcycle during the Tour de France and using two 35 mm cameras customised by Joe Dunton in London.
Shoulder-held camera work became his area of specialisation. With his knowledge of dynamics and rhythm, Ros soon started shooting live concerts and also worked on music documentaries, commercials and corporate films as lighting director.
As a director of photography, Ros has worked on a number of TV movies and feature films as part of the crew, including the renowned TV series, Kaamelott, for which he was responsible for lighting design.
Very early on his lighting career, Philippe became interested in digital cameras, drawing on his knowledge of film processing to work on the texture of the image.
He has become an expert on digital intermediate and has spoken at many international conferences and seminars on the subject. As an instructor, Ros has trained many operators and production managers in this domain, primarily in Europe.
Philippe also supervised the cinematography in ‘’Home’’, Yann Arthus-Bertrand’s feature film, produced by Elzevir Film and shot exclusively from helicopters.
One of his recent film, ‘’Oceans’’, directed by Jacques Perrin and Jacques Cluzaud, produced by Galatée Films, was a production lasting five and a half years, including 345 weeks of shoot spread over 3 and a half years, with seven teams. Philippe worked as technical supervisor of the cinematography, drawing heavilly on his knowledge of new developments relating to digital cameras. As director of photography, Ros ensured the quality of all the underwater night-time sections of the film and also those under the microscope.
Ros explored the 4K potential with Olivier Garcia, engineer at HDSystems, Laurent Desbrueres senior colorist and François Dupuy technical manager at Digimage Cinema postproduction facility. Together they redesigned the whole Sony F65 digital workflow in a series of three short movies on robots directed by Ben Elia. The ‘Bot-Trilogy’, screened all over the world, became a reference on 4K digital intermediate.
Beginning of 2016, he launched in Denmark, the CWC workshop (Camera, Workflow and Creativity) for cinematographers - next one will occur in Zurich. For filmmakers and actors he has designed with Joelle Sevilla - ‘’Acting Prod’’ manager - the ‘’Creative Triangle’’ workshop.
He is currently working as digital imaging supervisor for a serial of documentaries involving shooting in extreme low light conditions. As cinematographer, he is in preparation for feature films with an involvement from the first script, till the end of post-production. As well as documentaries where a customization of the digital tools is requested.
He is currently working for several manufacturers under non-disclosure agreement.
Simultanouesly, he is delivering a lot seminars, workshops and conferences for professionals and students in the whole world.
